Utah

Nicknamed the Beehive State, the name Utah is derived from the Native American Ute, which signifies "people of the mountains." This map of Utah is full of whimsy, vibrant colors, and images of people, labels, and topography, all of which makes it an attention grabber for kids. There is much to talk about and discuss about Utah with your child, or if you are a grandparent, with your grandchild. Your little one would likely find it fascinating that Utah is the only state in the U.S where a national forest touches every county, and that Utah has five national parks, which includes Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park.

The Mormon Temple and Tabernacle that is depicted could lead to a discussion about faith and how it ties into the identity of the state. Utah is the only U.S state with a Mormon majority, and the majority of whose population belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or LDS Church. Still, you can explore the landscape depicted on the map with your child, and point to the peaks of some of Utah's most majestic mountains. Uinta Mountains, for example, are Utah's highest mountain range that boasts more than a dozen peaks, ascending some 13, 000 ft.

Do a "did you know" segment and share with your child that Utah is the only state with a capital that has a name consisting of three words- Salt Lake City, or that Utah's Great Salt Lake exceeds the size of Rhode Island. You can also discuss the industries that helped to shape the state of Utah. Discuss the history of silver mining in Utah and how it added richness and diversity to the state with immigrant workers. Maybe, your child would find the topic of copper mining in the state more interesting. If that is the case, explore how Utah's role as a copper producer became significant in the development of electric power.

This delightful map is one that can excite and play on the imagination. It would be perfect for any child who is wants to learn about Utah.
