Lower Cullen Lake, as a part of a three-lake chain with Upper and Middle Cullen Lake, is located in Crow Wing County, north central Minnesota, named for the Crow Wing River, which in turn received its name from a notable island on the river that is shaped like a crow's wing. This lake is one of many beautiful lakes found in Minnesota, popularly known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes. Together, the three lakes occupy more than 1,300 acres and are all connected to each other by channels, each with its own personality. Lower Cullen Lake is the largest and most popular of the three lakes.



At 512 acres in size, Lower Cullen Lake is roughly 1.5 miles north of the city of Nisswa, Minnesota, approximately 39 feet deep at its deepest point, has a shoreline of 3.7 miles. Lower Cullen Lake falls in the category of mesotrophic, or moderately nutrient enriched lakes, or in other words, the lake is moderately clear water most of the summer with algal blooms. Having one inlet and one outlet, Lower Cullen Lake is a drainage lake, and water flows in the north east bay into the lake. The Cullen Brook is formed from water leaving Lower Cullen Lake, which flows through Nisswa and Roy Lakes and ultimately, to Gull Lake.



Crow County has an abundance and diverse wildlife, which includes white-tailed deer, cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, raccoon, red fox, gray fox, coyote, mink, muskrat, squirrels, and beaver. It is not uncommon to occasionally spot American black bears in the vicinity. The aquatic habitat of the marshes and lake country draws bald eagles and osprey that frequent the area, along with several species of waterfowl. Lower Cullen Lake is a recreational development lake, and it is also a great location for anglers to throw their lines, since the lake provides the perfect habitat for game, panfish and family fishing all together. As part of the lake chain that is known for its diverse species of fish, including Bluegill, Northern Pike, Walleye, Largemouth bass, Smallmouth bass and crappie.



While quaint cabins and homes dot the shoreline of Lower Cullen Lake, there is a great deal of recreational opportunities on the lake and its vicinity.
