The Sun Coast, Florida is a narrow peninsula with a stretch of several barrier islands and over 30 miles of white-sand beaches, extending along the Gulf of Mexico. It is also referred to as Florida's Beach Communities. It is held that Mayor Samuel G. Johnson of St. Petersburg, Florida coined the term Florida's Sun Coast in 1952. It is an enchanting beach haven, with clear blue waters and powdery white sand, and has been described as boasting "more sunshine than Honolulu," Hawaii. Needless to say, it is a rarity when the sun doesn't shine in Sun Coast. The region is one that is filled with cultural richness, evident in the theaters, museums, and music venues inland. Sun Coast covers the regions of St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, Tarpon Springs, Brandon, Tampa, Ruskin, Sarasota, and Bradenton, along with individually incorporated beach communities, including Indian Rocks Beach, St. Pete Beach, Madeira Beach, and Treasure Island. Clearwater Beach is uniquely situated in the City of Clearwater.

The Sun Coast has long been a magnet for a diverse mix of people. Around 1000 A.D., the Tocobago Indians were at the height of their civilization in the Safety Harbor region. In 1528, Spanish explorer Pánfilo de Narvaez is believed to have made his landing in the region, and in 1539, Hernando de Soto, carried out his exploration of the Tampa Bay area. As growth occurred in the region throughout the decades, individuals such as pioneer farmers, fishermen, and real estate speculators, tourists, retirees and working individuals continue to surrender to the pull of the Sun Coast.

Without its beaches, the Sun Coast would not be the captivating region that keeps drawing more and more folks to its shores. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater area beaches are described as some of the best in the region. Wildlife refuge, Egmont Key, offer up opportunities for snorkeling excursions and is known for its 1858 lighthouse. There are seven miles of beaches in DeSoto Park, where fishing piers and picnic areas exist, and there are chances to skate, bike, and camp. Shelly Key is a great site for bird watching and shelling. St. Pete Beach is one of the most popular in Long Key, while Sand Key boasts several beaches, including Madeira Beach, Redington Beach, North Redington Beach, and Redington Shores, among others. Clearwater Beach stands out, in part, because of its family-friendly atmosphere and enchanting sunsets. Great weather, white sandy beaches, and breathtaking sunsets, are among the very best of the Sun Coast.
