This well-executed Door County Map was originally published as part of the Historical Atlas of
Wisconsin in 1878 by Snyder, Van Vechten & Co., Milwaukee. It was a hand-colored lithographed Atlas map with two insets showing townships, sections, rural buildings, etc.
The county takes it's name from the passage between the tip of the peninsula and Washington Island. The early French called it "Door of the Dead", which came to be reffered to by Great Lakes sailors as "Death's Door." This high quality photographic print was made from a one of a kind hand painted reproduction from the original black and white map. The original hand-painted reproductions of many antique maps are available from Great River Arts.

Lisa Middleton's art has embellished book and CD covers, and Madison Avenue brochures.
Her subjects drawn from life experiences in Nepal, China, Haiti, the South Caribbean and
her beloved Western mountains. Her beautiful historic map paintings and reproductions
may be found in finer gift shops and galleries, or online at www.greatriverarts.com.
